About Houston Great Books

Houston Great Books is a community of readers who believe that serious books are best understood through serious conversation. We bring together people from across the Houston area to read and discuss works of lasting literary, philosophical, historical, and cultural importance. Our groups welcome readers of varied backgrounds and experience. No specialized academic training is required; what matters is a willingness to read carefully, think independently, and engage respectfully with others.

Our local discussion groups meet throughout the Houston area. Each develops its own reading program and character, but all share a commitment to substantive books and thoughtful conversation. The Council encourages the Great Books Foundation’s Shared Inquiry™ approach, which emphasizes open-ended questions, close attention to the text, and discussion among participants as equals rather than lectures or expert instruction.

We believe that great literature belongs to everyone, not just specialists. Readers gain something distinctive by encountering important works for themselves and testing their interpretations in conversation with others. Our discussions therefore focus on the text: what it says, what questions it raises, and how different readers understand it. The goal is not a single authoritative interpretation, but a deeper understanding reached through careful reading, questioning, and exchange.

The Houston Great Books Council supports local groups by publicizing discussion opportunities, helping develop new groups, offering training in discussion methods, and providing resources for leaders and members. The Council also connects people and organizations across Houston that share an interest in serious reading, civic conversation, and the life of the mind.

Each year, the Council sponsors an area-wide event that brings together participants from different discussion groups and interested members of the public. The event provides an opportunity to discuss a significant work in a broader setting, meet readers from other groups, and strengthen the fellowship of the Houston Great Books community.
