About Houston Great Books

Houston Great Books is a community of readers who believe that serious books are best understood through serious conversation. Our local discussion groups meet throughout the Houston area to read and discuss works of lasting literary, philosophical, historical, and cultural importance. They welcome readers of varied backgrounds and experience; no specialized academic training is required.

Our groups emphasize close attention to the text, open-ended questions, and discussion among participants as equals. The aim is not to arrive at a single authoritative interpretation, but to deepen understanding through careful reading and thoughtful exchange.

The Houston Great Books Council supports local groups by publicizing discussion opportunities, helping develop new groups, offering discussion-leader training, and connecting readers and organizations with similar interests. Each year, the Council also sponsors an area-wide event that brings together participants from different groups and interested members of the public.
