| Houston Great Books Council Services for the Visually Impaired |
| The Houston Great Books Council exists to enhance participation in Great Books for all its members. Accordingly, we are concerned with those of our members with visual impairments. We have been in touch with the organizations listed below who will loan recordings to anyone who medically qualifies as “Visually Impaired”. If the desired text is not already on tape, they will record it for you and then make the tape part of their permanent library. Some organizations may even have recorded materials on CD, if that is your preference. As far as we know, all these services are free to their members and membership requires only that you have a legitimate need. We would like to encourage our members, whether for themselves or someone they know, to use these groups and then provide us with feedback so we can help others. We specifically spoke to the director of Taping for the Blind, Inc. (TBI) about selections from the Great Books 50th Anniversary series and she indicated that although most of those readings are not currently available, they could provide recordings on short notice. If you need help delivering a text to be recorded, please contact us. We also believe Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) already has tapes of all the selections in the five Great Books Adult Series that are used by many of our groups. Please let us know of your experiences, either good or bad, with the following organizations in order that we may be able to advise our members that are in need of these services. Contact any Board member or use the contacts provided HERE. |
