Would you like to read and discuss great works of literature and philosophy (and even some recent fiction and non-fiction) with your peers?

Are there books on your shelf that you always meant to read or that you feel the time has come that you really should read?

Would you like to re-visit a classic that you haven't read for years and decide if it affects you differently after many years?

Or are you puzzled about why a particular work is "great" and would like to hear what others like yourself think?

If  you answered "Yes!" to any of these questions, then
we want you.

The HGBC represents 19 Great Books discussion groups that meet in central and outlying areas of Houston. Our groups:

                      -   consist of 5-25 members
                      -   meet monthly or bi-weekly
                      -   meet daytimes or evenings
                      -   meet weekdays or weekends

Most have rotating discussion leaders and permanent group secretaries.

The Houston Great Books Council is affiliated with the Great Books Foundation of Chicago, a national organization that promotes the reading of great literature and an examination of the great ideas underlying those works.

If you enjoy reading such works and then discussing them with your peers, we may be just what you are seeking. Consult
our Houston-area map to find a group geographically, or browse our various groups to see when they meet and what they are reading. To see a chronological list of our events, check our calendar.

All meetings are free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary...just choose a group and visit with us to see if we are right for you.
