| In celebration of summer's end and the beginning of a new "reading season", the Houston Great Books Council is planning an all-day event devoted to a book AND a movie. As most of you know, "The Hours" by Michael Cunningham is the 1999 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel based on the Virginia Woolf classic, "Mrs. Dalloway". In addition, "The Hours" was made into an excellent motion picture which garnered nine Academy Award nominations and starred Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Ed Harris and Meryl Streep. The relationship of the books and the movie to each other is fascinating. They all seem to reinforce their common themes, while remaining true to themselves. For those of you who have read "Mrs. Dalloway", you know that the book is a rich, multi-layered work worthy of a Great Books discussion. Combined with the movie, we should have a great time discussing all three. |
